On Sunday, the chilly weather in Newark attempted to keep everyone indoors from seeing La Princesa de Salsa, (The Princess of Salsa) La India. The count of guests grew larger even while the rain continued to fall. The young and the wise gathered in the lawn of Military Park with their “Puerto Rico” colored flags on their laps.
Finally, the moment everyone had been waiting for came: La India took the stage and belted notes in Spanish and English as she sang hits from the broad span of her music career. Her voice is so powerful and her songs are so honest and genuine; the crowd couldn’t help but to be swept up in the emotion.
La India emphasized that all we need is ‘love’ and ‘togetherness as a community as she acknowledged her African roots. La India also paid tribute to the ‘Queen of Salsa’, Celia Cruz. As she danced Salsa across the main stage, the crowed followed along. In close, she blew kisses to the crowd, thanked them for supporting her career, while keeping warm in her shawl.
